Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to what customers ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call 800.491.1073 and we’ll help.
- What types of gears do you make?
- We're a custom gear manufacturer producing spur, helical, bevel and mitre, and worm gears, plus sprockets, splines, racks and timing pulleys — all cut to your print. We also distribute and re-machine U.S. Tsubaki stock sprockets and chain.
- How large a gear can you cut?
- Our cutting capacity is hobbing from 1/4" to 60", shaping from 1/8" to 36" diameter, and bevel gearing from 1/4" to 24" diameter. If your part is near those limits, send the print and we'll confirm the fit.
- Can you make a part if I don't have a drawing?
- Often, yes. We reverse-engineer parts from a sample regularly — send us the worn or broken part and we'll work back to the correct tooth form and dimensions. A clear sketch with the mating dimensions can also be enough to get started.
- What materials do you work with?
- We cut gears to your print across a wide range of materials, and we offer many sources for heat treating and metal finishes. Tell us the material and specification on your drawing and we'll confirm it.
- How do you inspect quality?
- Our Quality Control Department bases its inspection on the AGMA Inspection Manual 2000-A88. We measure profile, lead and composite error on calibrated ITW, Fellows, Gleason and Brown & Sharpe instruments, verifying the tooth form against your drawing. Commercial Gear is a member company of the AGMA.
- Do you handle prototype and low-volume work, or only production runs?
- Both. We produce everything from a single prototype to a repeating production run on the same equipment. Tell us the quantity and we'll quote the job you actually have.
- Can you troubleshoot a gear that keeps failing?
- Yes. Troubleshooting difficult gear problems is part of what we do, including parts made elsewhere. With over 120 years of combined industry experience, our people can evaluate the data and offer a corrective plan of action rather than just cutting another one.
- How do I get a quote?
- Send us your print, CAD file or a sample, along with the material, quantity and when you need it, and we'll price it. Use the quote form, email info@commercialgear.com, or for an urgent requirement call 800.491.1073.
